We help rural communities and key land-use decision-makers conserve forests, protect biodiversity, and build resilient communities, by securing long-term forest management rights, promoting sustainable livelihoods, and fostering multi-stakeholder collaboration.

Recognising that the survival of both biodiversity and rural communities depends on aligned and equitable forest management, Sangga Bumi implements a five-year conservation and community development plan according to our Theory of Change.

Impact goals

Sangga Bumi Lestari’s approach is rooted in the understanding that forest and biodiversity conservation, thriving ecosystems, and resilient communities are deeply interconnected. Forests within concessions can only be preserved if concession managers are encouraged to develop concessions according to economic, social, and environmental sustainable development criteria. Similarly, forests outside concessions will thrive only if local people have the capacity to make autonomous management decisions. The survival of key species and the resilience of ecosystems to climate change depend on integrating forest areas, both inside and outside concessions, under aligned management plans. As many villagers rely on natural resources from these forests for their livelihoods and well-being, maintaining healthy ecosystems is essential for both individual and community well-being. Moreover, well-being will further increase if communities have the resources to pursue economic opportunities that align with their needs.
